When a significant slip closed Russell Road, around 18 students in the Whangaruru area were left without reliable transport to and from school.
Access to the community became significantly more challenging, with vehicles required to travel via Pigs Head Road under pilot vehicle escort each day. Despite the changing road conditions, students still needed to attend school safely and consistently.
Cross Country was approached at short notice to establish two daily school transport services between Whangaruru and Whangārei.
The expectation was clear. The service needed to be operating within two weeks.
Responding quickly, we developed an immediate mobilisation plan that balanced short-term delivery with a sustainable long-term operating model.
Experienced SESTA drivers from our Manukau operation, Sonnie and Glenn, travelled to Whangaruru to establish the service and ensure students could begin travelling as quickly as possible.
At the same time, recruitment was underway to build a local driving team. New drivers were recruited, trained and supported to transition the service to a locally based operation while maintaining continuity for students and their families.
This approach allowed the service to commence immediately while creating a long-term solution for the community.
With only two weeks available, multiple workstreams were delivered simultaneously.
During mobilisation we:
The service commenced on schedule and has continued to operate reliably despite the challenging operating environment.
The Outcome
The Whangaruru community once again has dependable daily transport connecting students with their education. Now entering its third school term, the service continues to operate safely and reliably, providing certainty for students, families and the school despite ongoing access challenges.
The response has received positive feedback from both the Whangaruru community and the Ministry of Education, recognising the professionalism of the team and the speed with which the service was established.
